چکیده

The perception of human movement is a key component of daily social interactions. Although extrastriate area MT+/V5 is closely associated with motion processing, its role in the processing of sparse 'biological motion' displays is still unclear. We developed two closed matched psychophysical tasks to assess simple coherent motion perception and biological motion perception, and measured changes in performance caused by application of TMS over MT+/V5. Performance of the simple motion discrimination task was significantly depressed by TMS stimulation, and highly correlated within observers in TMS conditions, but there was no significant decrement in performance of the biological motion task, despite low intra-observer correlations across TMS conditions. We conclude that extrastriate area MT+/V5 is an obligatory waypoint in the neural processing of simple coherent motion, but is not obligatory for the processing of biological motion. Results are consistent with a dual neural processing route for biological motion processing.

Distinct neural mechanisms for body form and body motion discriminations.

Actions can be understood based on form cues (e.g., static body posture) as well as motion cues (e.g., gait patterns). A fundamental debate centers on the question of whether the functional and neural mechanisms processing these two types of cues are dissociable. Here, using fMRI, psychophysics, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), all within the same human participants, we show that me...

Recognition of biological motion from blurred natural scenes.

Biological-motion perception can be regarded as a template-matching process. We are concerned with the visual cues in this template. Biological-motion perception is usually studied with point-light displays similar to the point-light displays invented by Johansson (1973 Perception and Psychophysics 14 201 - 211). These stimuli are in some ways abstract. In order to use more natural stimuli, we ...

Complex interactions between spatial, orientation, and motion cues for biological motion perception across visual space.

Human observers are adept at perceiving complex actions in point-light biological motion displays that represent the human form with a sparse array of moving points. However, the neural computations supporting action perception remain unclear, particularly with regards to central versus peripheral vision. We created novel action stimuli comprised of Gabor patches to examine the contributions of...

COMPARISON BETWEEN MINIMUM AND NEAR MINIMUM TIME OPTIMAL CONTROL OF A FLEXIBLE SLEWING SPACECRAFT

In this paper, a minimum and near-minimum time optimal control laws are developed and compared for a rigid space platform with flexible links during an orientating maneuver with large angle of rotation. The control commands are considered as typical bang-bang with multiple symmetrical switches, the time optimal control solution for the rigid-body mode is obtained as a bang-bang function and app...

Necessary but not sufficient: Motion perception is required for perceiving biological motion

Researchers have argued that biological motion perception from point-light animations is resolved from stationary form information. To determine whether motion is required for biological motion perception, we measured discrimination thresholds at isoluminance. Whereas simple direction discriminations falter at isoluminance, biological motion perception fails entirely. However, when performance ...
